  About the Morehouse King Collection
  RWWL as Custodian

On June 23, 2006, a group of prominent Atlantans, led by current Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin and former Atlanta Mayor and U.S. Ambassador to South Africa Andrew Young, purchased and transferred a historic collection of writings and other items representing the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to King’s alma mater, Morehouse College. The group of original manuscripts, writings and sermons and books from his personal library—now known as the Morehouse College Martin Luther King Jr. Collection—were previously scheduled for auction on June 30, 2006, by Sotheby’s in New York.

Soon after the purchase, the AUC Robert W. Woodruff Library as the official and only library operating to serve the information needs of the students and faculty of Morehouse and three other AUC member institutions, was designated as “custodian” of the Morehouse College Martin Luther King Jr. Collection, charged with housing and overseeing the security and preservation of the collection until further notice.

Since receiving the Morehouse King Collection on September 14, 2006, the Archives Research Center of the AUC Robert W. Woodruff Library has completed several milestones associated with its proper preservation, conservation and care and its future availability for scholarly access.
